Mascot MacCato is PennWest Edinboro's 'Scottish ambassador.'
MacCato – Edinboro’s beloved mascot – started his college career, taking residence in the nearby Edinboro Bog (campus landmark, Mallory Lake).
The town of Edinboro was chartered in 1840 and named by its founders in honor of Edinburgh, Scotland. Angus MacCato, commonly referred to as simply “MacCato,” first joined the staff of the Spectator – Edinboro’s student newspaper, before leading the athletics teams.
Although it took two years for “Fighting Scots” to become the official nomenclature of Edinboro athletics teams in 1971, MacCato has served as the prototype of Scottish heritage – complete with his Royal Stewart Tartan kilt and headband, steadfast Edinboro shield and leather wrist guards and boots.
MacCato has become the symbol of Edinboro and Scottish pride, leading our sports teams to victory and representing the university at public events. When he’s not performing with the Edinboro cheerleading squad and student groups, MacCato can be found around the Frank G. Pogue Student Center and McComb Fieldhouse – meeting with Fighting Scots athletes and fans and boosting morale.
