PennWest receives It’s On Us grant funding

PennWest California students, members of athletics teams, clubs and organizations, walk a mile around campus in high heels as part of the annual "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" event, raising awareness for the end of sexual abuse.

Pennsylvania Western University has received grant funding through the It’s On Us movement, which works to combat campus sexual assault by giving students the tools they need to create a culture of prevention. PennWest will use the $38,000 grant to:

  • Invest in Green Dot training, which educates student organizations and athletes about bystander intervention.
  • Purchase materials for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an international march in which men and boys lead the way to ending sexual and domestic violence.
  • Secure faculty and staff training by nationally recognized speaker Christina Irene to increase awareness and reporting of sexual assault of students with disabilities.

Amy Salsgiver, PennWest executive director of Equity and Title IX, emphasized the importance of employee involvement.

“These events will ultimately impact our students by creating a more inclusive, understanding campus environment,” Salsgiver said.

PennWest employees will receive information via email about the trainings and programs.

Students interested in participating in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes events can contact Salsgiver at asalsgiver@pennwest.edu or Andrew Matt, associate director of Equity and Title IX, at amatt@pennwest.edu.
