PennWest DEI office plans November events on all campuses

Movember

Pennsylvania Western University Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion invites students, faculty and staff on the California, Clarion and Edinboro campuses to take part in various November events of recognition and celebration.

Movember/No Shave November

Throughout November, ODEI is hosting a social media contest for No Shave November to promote men's physical/mental health and wellness and to engage with others on the topic via social media. Students, faculty and staff can submit photos in three categories: Most Growth (from Nov. 1-30); Most Creative (artistic, stylized, etc.); and Best ‘Stache (for best facial hair overall – mustache, beard and beyond). Each campus will select a winner for each category. For more details and to submit photo entries, click here.  In addition, a few times during November, ODEI will have tables with sticker mustaches.

Food for Thought

ODEI’s monthly Food for Thought is a chance for students, faculty and staff to join the Office of DEI for lunch. The time is intended to be an informal, yet informative time where people can have conversations, learn about upcoming events and available resources, and to establish broader connections with others from the university. Food for Thought will take place from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at Gold Rush, California campus; Nov. 7 at Eagle Commons, Clarion campus; and Nov. 13 at Van Houten, Edinboro campus.

World Kindness Day

Celebrate World Kindness Day by being the “I” in “Kind.” On Nov. 13, the university campus communities are encouraged to visit Natali Student Center in California, Eagle Commons in Clarion; or Van Houten in Edinboro, where participants can take pictures in front of huge posters, allowing them to literally be the “I” in “Kind.”

Native American History Month

In observance of Native American History Month, the Allegany River Seneca Dancers will perform traditional songs and dances of the Iroquois from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 11 in Hart Chapel, Clarion; Nov. 13 in Pogue MPR, Edinboro; and Nov. 18 in Natali Performance Center, California. The performances are not only an opportunity to learn about Native American culture and folklore, but also a way to have fun, as the dancers engage the audience in their dances.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

In honor and remembrance of those who took their own lives during the past year, ODEI will show the film “Casa Susanna” and provide the opportunity for participants to customize personal jar lanterns. After the film and craft, the lanterns will be lit with tealights for a memorial vigil that includes reading of names and a moment of silence and remembrance. The events will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in Jennie Carter DEI Center in California, Gemmell 250/252 in Clarion, and Pogue MRP-B in Edinboro.

AIDS Quilt with PA Thrive

In remembrance of the lives lost to AIDS/HIV, PA Thrive Partnership will bring the AIDS Quilt to each campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Eagle Commons in Clarion, Nov. 18 at Pogue Student Center in Edinboro, and Nov. 21 at Natali Student Center in California.
