At Pennsylvania Western University, the Bachelor’s of Arts in History will help you develop deep historical knowledge as well as strong critical thinking skills that will serve you well in a wide range of careers.
When you explore the lessons of history, you will be ready to excel in many fields. The study of history encourages you to examine the values of your society and those of other societies. It develops your abilities to read critically, think analytically, communicate ideas effectively and examine human problems in light of ethical values.
At PennWest, you will work closely with your professors to learn about traditional and contemporary theories, philosophies and ideologies, all the while focusing on skills that are in demand in the 21stcentury liberal arts job market. You'll explore the functions and roles of major governmental, quasi-governmental and non-governmental institutions in different political systems, cultures and societies throughout the ages and receive a hands-on introduction to historical research and writing.
You’ll have the opportunity to elect a wide variety of courses that suit your interests, including global history, various African American topics, women’s studies and other diverse subjects that are relevant in today’s society.
Whether you choose to enter the workforce or go on to earn an advanced degree, you’ll graduate armed with a solid understanding of how the study of history impacted the past and shapes the future.

What You'll Become
What can you do with a history degree? The answer is: Plenty! Some professions, such as teacher, archivist and museum curator, are directly related to the history major. But many students also find that undergraduate study in history provides an excellent foundation for careers in law, religion, the Foreign Service and diplomacy, as well as government. In addition, history majors are employed in marketing and communications fields, the business sector, and the insurance industry. Our alumni have gone on to complete graduate programs in history at Carnegie Mellon University, West Virginia University, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Kentucky, University of Norwich and many others.
