
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

At PennWest University, our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program offers Registered Nurses the advanced training needed to serve adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients affected by violence. With a focus on rural and underserved communities, this program addresses the need for trauma-informed, forensic nursing care that aids both patient recovery and legal processes.
The SANE program, housed within PennWest’s Department of Nursing and Health Professions, combines expert instruction with immersive, hands-on learning. Through a blend of online modules and in-person sessions with experienced faculty and industry leaders, this program offers certification pathways for both SANE-A (Adult/Adolescent) and SANE-P (Pediatric). Students receive full support, including stipends, travel, and paid certification fees, as they advance toward becoming community advocates in forensic nursing.

What You'll Study
The SANE-A/SANE-P curriculum equips RNs with specialized knowledge and hands-on forensic nursing skills essential for care in high-stakes situations. This two-class, 10-week each class program includes training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, evidence collection, medical forensic photography, and collaboration with judicial and community organizations. Students gain practical skills through precepted clinical simulations, including practice with high-fidelity mannequins and forensic kits.
Key topics in this comprehensive curriculum include:
- Forensic assessment of adult and pediatric patients.
- Evidence collection and preservation for judicial processes.
- Trauma-informed care and patient-centered communication to support survivors.
- STI testing and pregnancy risk evaluation post-assault, along with discharge planning.
- Multidisciplinary collaboration with advocacy centers, law enforcement, and judicial systems.
Upon completion, participants are eligible to sit for the SANE-A and SANE-P certification exams, marking a significant milestone in becoming a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

SANE Trained
Upon completion of the certificate, students will be SANE trained and can provide SANE services to their communities. At the completion of the guided practice hours, students will be eligible to sit for their paid certification exam.
