In the Bachelor of Social Work degree program at Pennsylvania Western, you will learn how to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities to restore and enhance social functioning.

The fully accredited bachelor's degree program is specially designed to:

  • Help social work majors focus on how to improve the quality of life for at-risk people in the nearby region and throughout Pennsylvania.
  • Enable social work majors to participate in a one-semester practicum in a social services or human services agency.
  • Ensure full understanding of the role of a social worker by placing students in the field for 480 hours in their last semester.
  • Encourage students to practice interpersonal skills in our lab and be videotaped for feedback from peers and faculty in the program.

What You'll Study

In the Bachelor’s in Social Work program at PennWest, you’ll study a range of topics designed to prepare you for professional social work practice. This program is offered in-person at the California and Edinboro campuses and online. An in-person degree emphasizes traditional in-person courses at one or more of our locations. An online degree is offered 100% online.

    What You'll Become

    The BSW degree will prepare you to work as a social director in diverse settings such as: child welfare, foster care and adoption agencies, drug and alcohol treatment facilities, case management programs, residential treatment facilities, behavioral health program, nursing homes/long-term care facilities, etc.  Students who graduate with a BSW degree have the opportunity to earn Advanced Standing in the MSW program and can complete the MSW program in one full calendar year.

    Career Paths

    • Child and Family Social Worker: Works with children and families to ensure their safety and well-being, often in settings like schools, child welfare agencies, and family services organizations.
    • Substance Abuse Counselor: Assists individuals struggling with addiction, offering therapy and support to help them overcome substance abuse issues (may require additional certification).
    • Healthcare Social Worker: Supports patients in healthcare settings, helping them navigate medical systems, cope with illness, and access necessary resources (entry-level positions).
    • Community Health Worker: Promotes health and wellness in communities by providing education, resources, and support to address health disparities and improve public health outcomes.
    • School Social Worker: Addresses the social, emotional, and academic needs of students, working within educational settings to provide support and resources (may require additional certification).
    • Rehabilitation Counselor Assistant: Supports rehabilitation counselors in helping individuals with disabilities achieve personal and professional goals.
    • Social and Community Service Manager: Oversees social service programs and organizations, managing staff and ensuring effective delivery of services to communities (entry-level managerial roles).
