About the institute
Named for Comanche elder LaDonna Harris, the LaDonna Harris Institute for Native American Studies was formed to create understanding and respect for Native American culture and peoples both within the University community and in the larger region.
The institute fulfills its mission, in part, by promoting and facilitating interactions between Native American experts and the public. Each year we invite indigenous scholars to our campus where they can participate in classes, meet individually with students and engage a wider audience in a public presentation.
Over the years the institute has invited traditional healers, writers and others who are passionate about sharing their culture with others.
The institute:
Through the institute, PennWest California students engage in faculty-directed research on native issues past and present. Faculty members present aspects of their research at regional and national forums.
By facilitating research, building library resources, and providing opportunities for the University community to hear the views of Native Americans, the institute is committed to carrying on the traditions of the indigenous cultures of America.
We are honored to continue the legacy of Comanche elder LaDonna Harris.
