Embracing Change, Finding Purpose

Ellie KeatingEllie Keating’s college journey didn’t start at PennWest Edinboro—it started at Point Park University, where she majored in dance. But after a year, she realized something was missing. She switched to stage management, thinking she had found the right path. But something still didn’t feel right.

"It took me a while to realize that changing paths isn’t failure—it’s growth. I had to stop worrying about what I thought I ‘should’ do and start focusing on what truly made me happy."

At the encouragement of her mother and sister, both connected to Edinboro, Keating transferred and took general education courses while exploring new possibilities. That’s when she discovered communication sciences and disorders (CSD)—a field that perfectly blended her desire to help others with her love of science and communication.

"The first time I learned about audiology, I knew this was it. Helping people regain their hearing, their ability to communicate—it’s life-changing work."

Now, Keating is applying to doctoral programs in audiology while gaining hands-on experience at a hearing aid practice, helping patients adjust to treatment before seeing an audiologist.

"I love that I’ll be able to work directly with people, improving their quality of life. That’s what drives me."

Her story is a testament to the power of exploration and resilience—a reminder that the right path isn’t always the one you expect.

"You don’t have to have it all figured out. Follow your interests, trust the process, and know that everything will work out in the end."
