Turning Involvement Into a Career
It starts with a spark—a moment when curiosity meets opportunity. For Lindsey Tolbert, that spark came when she transferred to PennWest’s California campus, initially studying Graphic Communications before shifting her focus to Public Relations, and joined the Student Activity Board (SAB). What started as a way to meet people and explore campus life became a launchpad for her career. Tolbert planned events, managed contracts, and even collaborated with industry professionals—one of whom would later become her employer.
Now an Event Coordinator and Talent Agent at Neon Entertainment, Tolbert reflects on her time with SAB as pivotal. “I met my boss as a student putting on events, not knowing he would be my boss someday,” she shares. “The hands-on experience I gained was life-changing.”
Her story highlights how campus involvement offers more than extracurricular engagement; it provides real-world skills, confidence, and connections that can shape a lifetime.
During her time at SAB, Tolbert was deeply involved in coordinating major campus events, including concerts, comedy shows, and student activities that brought the community together. She learned the intricacies of contract negotiations, talent management, and marketing—all skills she now applies in her professional role. Tolbert's ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and problem-solve in high-pressure situations prepared her for the fast-paced world of event planning.
Looking back, Tolbert credits her willingness to step outside her comfort zone as a key factor in her success. She encourages students to take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom, emphasizing that real-world experience often holds just as much value as academic learning. Her path serves as a testament to how students can turn their passion into a profession, setting the stage for future success.
